Anyone who knows me, knows that I love movies. I become a psycho little monster around Golden Globe/Oscar time. I take it seriously. As serious as Presidential elections: read up on the candidates, VOTE or else shut the fuck up. Same applies to nomiated films for these award shows: See the movies nominated, form opinions or SHUT THE FUCK UP you didn't see the movie. Reading a review of a nominatated movie is not the same thing as suffering through it (flashback to Eyes Wide Shut). This year just for fun we made a score sheet with the real nominations, all of which I knew from memory and fun categories such as: Most likely to participate in a 3way, plastic surgery victim, person you'd want the signifigant other to dress like, you get the idea.
I was very please Ricky Gervais was introducing the show and presentors because I think he's one of my favorite comedians. Notice how I don't call him "host". Hosting duties include a musical performance or costume change, he had none of that.
Saturday before the GG's I took myself on a date to two movies "Crazy Heart" and "An Education" before my Twisty show. I have no fear of looking like a sad loser or friendless freak by going to the movies alone. You are the mysterious, gorgeous person sitting alone. Maybe you are a movie critic or foreign royalty or actress watching your movie for the first time in the theatre. Nobody knows! they are too scared to ask you! I am a firm believer in sneaking in drugstore candy but purchasing a drink at the theatre. I love ice.
Ok back to the GG's. Very please Jeff Bridges won for Crazy Heart. I walked out of that movie knowing he'd take home the Oscar. He's that talented as Bad Blake the alcoholic, aging country singer/songwriter. SEE THIS MOVIE. Then read about Ryan Bingham the rising songwriter star thanks to this movie, he's also in Bad Blake's bowling alley pick up band.
I like Robert Downey Jr. I liked Sherlock Holmes, more than I thought but if they are both nominated for Oscars, which they should. Jeff Bridges will win.
I agree with something my dad said. There seems to be a lot of #2 movies this year. No best pictures. Ironic as this is the year the academy decided to have 10 TEN! Best Picture Nominations. In that case you better move UP to the Best Picture category and screw that animated one. It should be there anyways. Seriously 10 best picture nominations this year? Gross.
I haven't seen Avatar. It doesn't grab me. I know I'm in the 1% of the Universe who hasn't seen the MOST EXPENSIVE MOVIE EVER MADE. Maybe it's a new Sandlot for me. My Sandlot experience is simple. I thought the trailer looked really dumb when I was a kid. Then I saw it on dvd and LOVE LOVE LOVED it. It's up there with the Goonies or Last of the Mohicans, i can watch it anytime. I'll see Avatar before the Oscars but only so you can't label me a hypocrite.
I also haven't seen The Blind Side but apparently I need to because it looks like it comes down to Sandra Bullock in this "Remember the Titan's" look alike or Meryl Streep's Julia Child performance for female Oscar. Both movies make me want to slice my throat a little but I'll choke down the movie in hopes their performances will prove me wrong and inspire me. As long as Up in the Air doesn't win for acting awards I'll be happy. That was the most overrated movie. I'm sick to death of it's tv commercial previews, seriously one of the best movies of all time? George Clooney's finest performance to date? WHAT?! He played himself. Didn't anyone see Syriana?
That brings us to Precious. My friend Irene brought the PUSH to my world about a year ago when we were writing a show. I knew it was graphic, horrific, filled with abuse, pain, shit. The movie hard to watch, funny at times, a tad out of wack but I was so moved the the female performances (sherri shepard had a great cameo) that I'll overlook the graphic abuse and fantasy sequences. Monique will win the Oscar. Precious might be nominated herself, Mariah could sneak in there, even Robin Thicke's wife Paula Patton should be recognized more for her role in the movie. Ok i'll shut up on precious.
Christolph Walz is a sure bet as best supporting actor from Inglourious Basterds which has a great shot at best screenplay. I'm rooting for it because anything that will crush Up in the Air makes me smile. Nothing personal G. Clooney I just prefer or creative fucked up Tarantino pick.
